Reach the island before looking for Cliodhna
The main story takes you to the volcanic island late, but that is not the only route. AlcastHQ describes reaching it earlier through Drabnir's Grotto on Battahl's southern coast. The cave and escort route contain dangerous enemies. Bring recovery supplies and a party capable of protecting a slow-moving NPC. A suggested level in a guide is not a guaranteed survival threshold. Gamer Guides stresses the difficulty of reaching the area early; AlcastHQ supplies the alternative cave route. Read those as a distinction between access and practical readiness, rather than proof that a particular main-quest milestone is mandatory. [1][2]
Complete Gautstafr's request
- After leaving Drabnir's Grotto toward the island, follow the road until you meet Gautstafr complaining about his back. Give him the herbs requested by the quest. [1]
- Visit Windwalker's Home and meet his wife, Cliodhna. Speak to Gautstafr again and agree to escort him to the healing springs. [1][2]
- Take him to the hot springs at Volcanic Island Camp. AlcastHQ describes climbing the camp's central ladders and passing through the tunnel to reach the destination. Guard him during encounters rather than running far ahead. [2]
- Finish the dialogue with Cliodhna. Then visit a vocation-change service, including the one at the camp, to select Magick Archer. [1]
What remains missing after the escort?

The quest unlock, vocation selection and teaching item are separate steps. Gamepressure describes Cliodhna's vocation reward and scroll; PowerPyx names Spellbow's Paradox as the item for Martyr's Bolt. Neither means that merely reaching her home finishes the entire sequence. [3][4]
If you meant the new Dark Arisen skills
This quest unlocks the base vocation. It does not replace the expansion's obelisk purchases or maister spirit challenge. Once you can use Magick Archer, consult the Norgan obelisks for its monument and the DLC maister guide for the later reward.
No guide consulted establishes a universal remedy for every missing NPC or interrupted escort. If your journal diverges from these steps, preserve the current save and record the active objective before treating it as a new-game requirement.
