Dragon’s Dogma 2 multiplayer: what co-op supports

Dragon’s Dogma 2 has no official online multiplayer. You can share AI Pawns on the same platform; Steam players also have the unofficial DD2gether alpha, but should not expect a trouble-free campaign or DLC finale. [1][2]

Before trying DD2gether

  1. Protect your existing game. The author’s repository warns that the mod overwrites your Pawn. Make a separate backup before installing, and retain it when switching back to single-player. [2]
  2. Use the current author instructions. Start at GitHub · DD2gether releases ↗ ↗ (external, opens in a new tab), then follow the linked Windows or Linux installation guide. Avoid mixing an old tutorial with a newer launcher.
  3. Choose the host before progressing. ButFrog states that campaign progress belongs to the host, while character progress carries to other campaigns. If only one player owns the DLC, the author says the non-owner must host; that player cannot join the owner’s world. These are author-reported rules, not our tested results. [4]
  4. Keep the first session simple. The repository recommends disabling other mods while testing. Start with an ordinary encounter before committing to story progression; record what works for both players. [2]
  5. Keep a recovery plan. Use the author’s uninstall/single-player instructions when leaving co-op. Do not delete a save to investigate a connection error. [2]

Dark Arisen and Alpha 0.33.3: known limits

On 14 October, ButFrog said 0.33.3 should stop falling through DLC terrain, but opening menus could still make the floor transparent. On 15 October the author confirmed rift problems remained. One player’s 14 October report described guest loading failures and host-only rift rewards; that is one report, not a failure rate. [4]

The same thread contains a 15 October 0.33.3 report of character-save recognition failure, with the guest unable to join. No confirmed remedy was established in the reviewed replies. For that symptom, keep the existing files and send the author a saved bug report rather than borrowing someone else’s save. [4]

These limits change the practical recommendation: use the alpha for experimental sessions with a friend, and preserve a way to continue alone. A successful connection does not establish that later quests, cutscenes or endgame transitions will synchronize. The repository still cautions about untested quest and late-game content. [2]

Make a useful compatibility report

Record the game build, DD2gether version, Windows or Linux, DLC ownership on both accounts, host versus guest, other installed mods, and the last action before failure. Separate “joined successfully” from “quest completed for both players.” The author directs reports to the project’s Discord and requests a saved bug report; its current invitation is linked from the repository. [2]

Common questions

Is Pawn sharing real-time co-op?

No. The companion is AI-controlled, even when another player created it. Official online features do not let that player join your session. [1]

Is DD2gether available on consoles?

The author’s 14 October answer identifies Steam as the supported route. Do not treat PC mod installation instructions as console instructions. [4]

Does Alpha 0.33.3 mean Dark Arisen is fully supported?

No. Recent author replies and player reports still identify DLC problems. Check the release notes and discussion before your next session. [3][4]
