Hard Mode: enable it without confusing the save options

Enable Hard Mode from the title screen’s Game Settings, then read the confirmation for your save. Changing difficulty and restarting the story with retained character data are separate choices. Do not delete a save just to find the option.

Checked 19 October 2026. This is a source-based guide to the 2026 DD2 update, not the first Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen. We have not personally tested the mode.

Find the setting on the title screen

CAPCOM’s 9 October announcement says TU4.0 adds Hard Mode for an existing or a new save. It separately adds restarting the story while retaining character data. You do not need to erase a character to investigate the difficulty setting. [1]

  1. Install the current game update and return to the title screen.
  2. Open Options → Game Settings → Game Mode. The AllThingsHow walkthrough places this field on the title screen rather than the pause menu.
  3. Select Hard if it is offered for the intended save, read the confirmation and verify the displayed Game Mode afterward. [2]

If the field is unavailable, check the selected save’s current mode and progression before assuming that owning the expansion is the missing step. This guide has not checked every console menu.

Difficulty change versus starting the story again

Your goalChoice to investigateBefore confirming
Keep the present quest state and increase difficultyGame Mode on the selected saveRead any restriction prompt; do not choose a restart merely to change difficulty.
Replay the story with the existing characterRestart with retained level/equipmentThis is a story-progress decision. Read the confirmation about what carries over.
Try a fresh characterNew game / separate available save slotKeep the existing save and verify which slot you are using.

The distinction between these choices follows CAPCOM’s announcement. The table is our decision aid, not a claim that we tested each transition. [1]

AllThingsHow reports restrictions for saves begun in Casual or Hard; an October player also saw a message requiring the ending before another mode change. Do not count on switching back immediately. The current confirmation on your own save is more useful than a generic claim that all modes are freely interchangeable. [2][3]

Hard Mode rewards: what is still unverified

AllThingsHow reports harder combat and increased XP and Discipline, but the official launch announcement retrieved for this review gives no numeric reward table. We cannot confirm double XP, a Discipline multiplier or a gold/drop multiplier from that material. [2][1]

To compare rewards, record the game build, difficulty, enemy, equipped reward bonuses and exact before-and-after XP/DCP. Keep any result labelled as one test until those conditions match. Figures from the first Dragon’s Dogma are not evidence for DD2.

Before committing a Norgan run

Check whether you want the harder encounters now or still need to complete a quest or equipment setup. A level number alone does not describe your weapon effects, recovery and pawn support. Use the build dependency guide to inspect those gaps, and the DLC access checks if Norgan itself is unavailable.

A brief successful fight is not proof of campaign-wide readiness. Keep the save decision separate from a build recommendation.
